Sheet-metal contractors award scholarship to IU-bound Mooresville student

INDIANAPOLIS (June 26, 2008) – A Mooresville, Ind., student who will study at Indiana University in the fall is this year’s recipient of an annual scholarship awarded by the central Indiana chapter of the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors National Association.

Danielle Deaton, 18, received a $2,000 check from SMACNA officers at the June 26 award ceremony at SMACNA’s downtown Indianapolis offices.

Deaton, who plans to study psychology at IU, is the daughter of journeyman sheet-metal worker Mike Reese Jr., who is a foreman with Bright Sheet Metal, and Teresa Reese. Deaton plans to use the money for tuition.

“Everything helps,” said Teresa Reese. “It’s a credit to her. She does work very hard.”

The Earl Martin Memorial Scholarship is an endowed gift that each year is awarded to an eligible student who is in the family of a central Indiana, Lafayette or Fort Wayne union sheet-metal worker or union sheet-metal contractor. The honor is named after the late Earl Martin, a longtime Indiana sheet-metal company leader.

“My father was a big believer in education,” said Kim Martin, president of Tarpenning-LaFollette, an Indianapolis sheet-metal contractor that specializes in architectural fabrication and installation. “He worked his way through college during the Depression and always emphasized education as a path to success.”

Martin presented the scholarship check during the award ceremony.
